For more than fifty years, Marbles Barbecue was the best place in town to get barbecue. Mr. Herman H. Marbles’ barbecue was known far and wide in northeast LA and people of all races and backgrounds lined up for his great food! Mr. Marbles wasn’t just a great cook; he was active in civic, social, civil rights and church groups. He was a powerful leader in the community.

Mr. Marbles passed away in 1970 at the age of 82 and rests in Magnolia Cemetery.

  1. Great BBQ. Despite being a Blacked owned restaurant I remember that he had a black side and a white side. The white side seemed to be mostly takeout. Shortly before Hurricane Katrina there was a restaurant in New Orleans East with an identical BBQ Sauce. I asked them one time and they said thier’s had come from a Marble family member. Sadly the NOLA restaurant never reopened.
