  1. Hello,

I am wondering if you may be able to help me locate the Dunn Place plantation. My great-great grandmother’s (Louise Johnson Gray aka Mama Lou) funeral program states that she was born there in 1858, and I’m planning a trip to Ouachita and would love to see it.

I think it may be related to the land/plantation in Logtown that the Dunn brothers (William and Richmond) bought from the Filhoil family after the Civil War if that helps.

I have only been able to find one mention of it in newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com/image/80159046/?terms=%22Dunn%20place%22&match=1) which is helpful, but too general for a non-local like me to pinpoint anything.

Any help or direction you can provide will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you

    1. I think you are right. I know the Dunn brothers worked on the Filhiol plantation at Logtown, and later bought land from the Filhiols for a house and cotton gin, They were forced off this property. They later bought 588 acres of land from the LeBaum family on both sides of the Ouachita River. It stretched from Grand Street to McEnery Street and from Allen Street to Riverside Nursing Home (I am quoting from the book “Contributors of Ouachita Parish: A History of Blacks To Commemorate the Bicentennial of the United States of America”.) As far as a map showing the property, I am not familiar with one. When you come to the area, the first thing I would do is check at the Ouachita Parish Courthouse. Good luck!
