Union Oil Mill, West Monroe, circa 1920.

The above is a very interesting shot of what is now Antique Alley.  The big building in the foreground is now Roma’s Italian Restaurant on Trenton Street.  Back then it was the Union Oil Mill (cotton seed).  Up until it closed in the 1990’s, it was the oldest continuously operating business in Ouachita Parish.  Across Pine Street is the old West Monroe Courthouse.  It had the fire station as well as the jail in it.  The site is now a parking lot, but there is a replica of the bell tower that holds the original courthouse bell.  Across Trenton Street from the Union Oil Mill, is what is now Miss Kay’s Eats and Sweets.  Back then it was a service station!

  1. My great uncle, Edward Houston, worked for Union Oil in 1901. Maybe a night shift. In May of 1901 he was shot and killed by a policeman named Heekin. While I have a few details, was wondering what newspapers of the day might have carried the story. I don’t know how to access coronor report or police reports if any. It seems the police man was charged, but acquitted by a Judge Hall. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
