Imagine getting stuck behind this caravan in rush hour traffic! William A. Bozone's Grocery is the building on the left. According to the 1912 City Directory, it was located at 339 DeSiard Street. On the far right, upper corner, you can make out the tower of the City Market (where People's Homestead building is now). … Continue reading DeSiard Street circa 1910

“New” Five Points
This is an interesting aerial shot looking straight up DeSiard. Louisville curves off to the left. It may not look familiar, since the 165 overpass is not there yet! Do you see ULM (Northeast Jr. College back then) off in the distance? This area is called Five points, or New Five Points. The old Five … Continue reading “New” Five Points
DeSiard Street in the 1920’s
Nice color postcard looking up DeSiard Street from Endom Bridge. Notice the trolley tracks in the streets?
Monroe Fire of 1871
The hand written caption on the bottom right is incorrect. this is the fire of 1871, started in one of Sidney Saunders' buildings. It destroyed Monroe, doing about a half million dollars of damage. Mealy was standing near the intersection of DeSiard and Grand streets.
Turn of the Century DeSiard
This is a rare, grainy photo I found! It shows men erecting a pole (probably electric!) on the corner of Jackson and DeSiard Streets. To give you an idea, the vacant lot is where the Central Bank and Trust Company building is now. You can see Kaliski Music Company in the back. The building later … Continue reading Turn of the Century DeSiard
300 Block of DeSiard Street, circa 1922
This breaks my heart and fascinates me at the same time. Using the 1924 city directory, I was able to determine that the wallpaper store on the right was located at 333 DeSiard Street. I pulled up the modern Google Street image and was just blown away. Except for the big building on the left … Continue reading 300 Block of DeSiard Street, circa 1922
St. John and DeSiard from another angle!
I found this old postcard online a while back and it was probably taken around the same time as yesterday's photo. You are looking up DeSiard Street. The bank building is in the foreground and across the street is Collens pharmacy. You can see a trolley coming up the track!
The Corner of DeSiard and St. John Streets
The last photo I will post from the scrapbook in the collection of Ouachita Parish Public Library's Special Collections is a shot down St. John Street. You can see the Building and Loan building on the right (now St. John's Pharmacy), which is still there, and the Knights of Pythias building across the street from … Continue reading The Corner of DeSiard and St. John Streets
