1916 – 1917 City Budget

One hundred and ten years ago today exactly, the News-Star printed the recommended budget for the City of Monroe. What jumped out at me was the $600 a year for the library and the Mayor’s salary of $4,000!

Without going down a rabbit hole, maybe it was a payment to the parish library, but it is an interesting hole

Back then, the library was solely funded by the city and this does not surprise me that is the yearly budget. It would be a few years later, when the cost became untenable, that the police jury agreed to step in.
