McLain Monument

McLain Monument

The McLain Monument rests in Monroe’s Old City Cemetery.  Next to the Saunders Monument, it is probably the most well known memorial in the cemetery.  The angel’s hand points up towards Heaven and she carries a crown in her left hand.  She marks the family plot of Captain L.D. McLain who founded the Union Oil Mill in West Monroe.  His in-laws the Crosleys lie buried here too.

I took this next photo around 1995 for a Graduate level class in college.  I have always loved it for the scratch on the film.  It looks like one of her feathers is floating down.  Notice her hand that had been pointing towards Heaven is now gone.  That is not due to vandalism.  She was struck by lightning.
