I found this interesting photo on my computer and it was labeled “Monroe Furniture Company Fire 1939”. I did a little digging online and found that the fire actually happened August 13, 1938. The fire started in the basement of the building, located next to the News-Star building. It quickly engulfed the entire structure. It took hours to get the fire under control but the building was completely destroyed. By the end of the next year, the Monroe Furniture Company had rebuilt on the same site. If you go to the end of Art Alley, you will see the building that replaced it!
