The Monroe Register of the 2d estimates our forces within the works at Vicksburg, at 25,000, under command of General Stephenson: Grant’s at 60,000, completely surrounding the city, and Johnston in his rear at 35,000. No firing had been heard at Monroe since Thursday the 28th, which induced the belief that the great battle for the defence [sic] of Vicksburg was ended.
