The Death of Wisner Colored School

I have always wondered when Wisner school closed. A few weeks ago, I was given a High School diploma from Wisner, dated 1920. I nearly cried! It was for future Doctor Arthur Herbert Johnson, Jr, son of A.H. Sr. and Henrietta Windham Johnson. This got me wondering again as to when the school closed. I think I found it in an article about how the Fire Marshal had cited and ordered demolished those buildings not made fire safe. This is the paragraph I found:

The News-Star, August 15, 1921, Page 1

The Wisner school on Washington and Ninth streets was condemned by the state fire marshal and was ordered [torn[ down within sixty days.

That means the diploma was for a member of one of the last graduating classes of the school! It is now housed in the Special Collections department.

So interesting! Thank you for sharing! I wonder if any of our family members (Fosters) went to this school!
