Unmarked Slave Burial Ground in Sterlington

This one I stumbled upon Wednesday. I have told you about the Phillips family cemetery in Sterlington on 165 North. It is the one marked with a stone cross, just north of the Fish House Restaurant, before the turn to Sterlington High School. In the March 31, 1915 News-Star is the description of the funeral of “Mrs. C.W. Phillips”, Rebecca Jane Crockett Phillips held at the Phillips Family Cemetery. One sentence left me stunned.

“An impressive feature of the funeral was the gathering beneath the trees overshadowing the burial ground of the negroes on the plantation…”

That means that very close to the Phillips Family cemetery is an unmarked slave cemetery. It would take ground penetrating radar to find it. WOW!!!

A later edit: I got excited and posted the above to my Facebook page and someone pointed out that it could also mean they were just standing nearby under some trees at the family cemetery. In other words, awkward wording. What do you think?
