THE KINDERGARTEN.
A Highly Satisfactory Exhibition at Monroe.
[To the Times.]
MONROE, La., May 31. – Some eight months since the first Kindergarten School ever carried on in Monroe was opened by Misses Potts and Trousdale. To-day they gave an exhibition at the opera-house which demonstrated the good that can be accomplished by such schools. About thirty little tots, aged from five to eight, went through with recitations, marches and many other interesting features with surprising correctness, showing that their good teachers had done their work well.
The teachers deserve credit for their success, and everyone in the crowded opera-house were loud in their praise of the Monroe Kindergarten.
Do we know where the opera house was located?

It was most likely Garretson’s Opera House, which was in the 100 block of DeSiard, right across from where St. John empties into DeSiard. You can see it on the Sanborn map for 1893 here: https://www.loc.gov/resource/g4014mm.g033681893/?sp=3&r=0.364,0.595,0.276,0.16,0 .

That is a fascinating map. On view #2, on S.Grand between Oak and Calypso, it appears that “tenements” are marked, although spelled wrong.
