Myrtle was born in Alabama and moved to Louisiana as a young girl. She received her degree from Northwestern and masters from LSU. Upon completion of her degree, she taught school at Grayson before coming to Monroe to be the first Principal of Georgia Tucker elementary. As principal, she loved the song, “Sunny Golden Rod” and would have her pupils sing it each morning. She served as principal from 1922 until her retirement in 1952. The above portrait hangs in the Special Collections department of the Ouachita Parish Public Library.
