I found the above photo several weeks back. I had never seen a photo of mayor Allen. Lewis was born in New London, CT April 19, 1838. His family later settled in the St. Louis, MO area where he grew up. After coming to Monroe and becoming a successful businessman, he served as Monroe’s mayor from 1884 to 1886. He had also served as bank president of the Bank of Monroe. Mayor Allen eventually moved back to St. Louis and died there of pneumonia on October 24, 1894 at the young age of 56. He is buried in his family plot at Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.
