
I was lucky enough to win this postcard last year, which shows St. Matthew Catholic Church and St. Hyacinth School on the left. St. Matthew still stands on the corner of Jackson and Grammont streets. The building did not get the church tower until 1917. The first brick for the church was laid in May, 1897 but the building wasn’t finished enough for services until it was dedicated on December 27, 1905! The date on the back of the postcard states it was sent through the mail in 1913, just four years before the steeple went up.
