UCV Marker Found

Over the Christmas break, I had a chance to wander the Old City Cemetery, looking for those markers the UCV placed to mark the graves of unmarked Confederate veterans back in the 20’s or so (See the “I Broke a Code Tuesday” post for further info.) I found only one of them in the back center section all by itself. I am afraid most of the markers are gone or buried under soil. Of course, I didn’t walk the entire cemetery inch by inch. This marker number is a bit confusing. It looks like marker number 47. When you examine the list of marker numbers, you will see there is no marker number 47.

There is a marker 46 in the cemetery and number 48 in the Catholic cemetery, but no 47. I don’t know what happened there. Mark James has a dash where the marker number should be. Could that be 47? The number may also be 17 instead which is listed as the grave of a Mr. Curtiss. No first name is mentioned. Puzzling indeed.

I made Mr. Curtiss a Findagrave memorial here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/291553489/curtiss
