SCOUT CAMP IS PURCHASED IN WEST MONROE
Kiwanis Club Hears of Passing of Deed Today.
Announcement was made at the noon lunch of the Kiwanis club, at Hotel Monroe today, of the purchase of a tract of more than 140 acres for a permanent Boy Scout camp located at Breard Springs, the cost being $4,000. Some weeks ago, a committee of the local scout council, comprising Professor T.O. Brown, C.C. Bell and R.M. Breard, Jr., was constituted and empowered with authority to make the purchase. the announcement made by Chairman Brown, was that the deed was passed today and that the fine tract is now so that Scouts can at once enjoy the property, there being a house thereon which can be used for camp purposes.
The statement was made that it is planned to sell 100 acres of the land, as the balance is all that will be required for Scout purposes. It is expected that sale of this 100 acres will go to reimburse for the cost of the entire tract. The financing of the tract is to be thus: Call is made for 40 men to volunteer $100 each, thereby raising the sum needed for purchase of the 140 acres. All wo do so will share pro rata in the sale of the 100 acres. Already several hundred dollars have been pledged by interested persons in sums of $100 each and it is hoped to have the entire $4,000 raised in short order. Any one wishing to subscribe can do so by seeing any member of the committee of three previously named.
A vote of thanks was given Professor Brown and the other committee members on behalf of Kiwanians for the satisfactory completion of the purchase and efforts to finance the undertaking successfully. that the new tract will prove the finest camping ground in the state for permanent Scout purposes, was the general opinion today.
Men in the Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Clubs stepped up. The money was raised to pay for the deed and Kiroli park was formed! In gratitude to the men who stepped up, the camp was named in honor of the clubs they were members of. Happy birthday Kiroli!
As an aside, I wonder if the “home” at the site was actually the old Breard Springs school building? It stood somewhere in that area. You can see the school here in a photo from the library collection: https://www.louisianadigitallibrary.org/islandora/object/oplib-camp%3A7 .
You can watch a reel created in honor of Kiroli’s 100th birthday here: https://vimeo.com/1086798626/84ca698dd6?ts=0&share=copy .
If you are in the area Saturday, the park is hosting an event in celebration of their anniversary!
