No, I’m not talking about Ubereats, Doordash or Grubhub. Over one hundred years ago, Monroe had a bakery called the Monroe Baking Co. The bakery would haul fresh baked breads and sweets to Ouachita parish homes, using delivery trucks. They would go as far as Perryville, Sterlington, Swartz and Lamkin. If the person they were delivering to wasn’t there, they would leave the goods between the door and the screen, perfectly sure the customer would be by later to pay their bill! The Monroe Baking Co. was located at 701 DeSiard street until the business was sold in 1924 to the Iron Mountain Bakery. According to a 1981 article, the Monroe Bakery was the first in Monroe to sell square sandwich loaves!
