A Cemetery Puzzle

The 16th of last month, I lead a beginning genealogy lecture at one of the local libraries. We were having technical difficulties with the projector set up, and IT was called. I continued my talk. We were discussing the lack of documentation of African American cemeteries in the area, when one of the IT people chimed in with, “There is a cemetery behind Little Bell Baptist Church, but none of the graves are marked. You can see the depressions though.” I was gobsmaked. I have LOVED Little Bell Baptist ever since I was a kid. I have talked about the church before. It sits on the Perryville road. The IT person who mentioned it has very deep roots in Perryville. I had never heard there was a cemetery there.

Last week, I still couldn’t get the church cemetery out of my mind. I decided to look for mentions of the church and cemetery on newspapers.com. I found an obituary in the Bastrop Daily Enterprise, Monday April 17, 1961, Page 4:

Leon Johnson

Funeral services were held Sunday at 12:30 a.m. for Leon Johnson who died April 11. He was a lifetime resident of Morehouse parish. The Rev. Mason was in charge of the service and interment was made in Little Bell Cemetery in Perry, La. with Harris Funeral Home in charge.

WOW! I went ahead and made a listing on Findagrave for the cemetery and a memorial page for Mr. Johnson. You can see it here: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/254661895/leon-johnson

A few days later, I got some further information from the IT person. She had put a pin in her Google maps where it is. The cemetery she describes is close to a nearby pond/lake in the woods, a little northeast of the church. The more I look at it, the more I think she is describing Gunby cemetery. Now here is the confusion. Is Gunby the same as Little Bell cemetery? I am perplexed.

  1. Several years ago I got permission and surveyed the original Little Bell Cemetery in the dead of winter. You cannot go in there in the summer, at least I would not. The original Little Bell Church was on the Perryville road. Years ago, the cemetery was moved to highway 165. Contact me via email and I’ll give you the email of Isabelle Woods. I gave her all information and all pictures I had taken that day. She has published several books of African-American cemeteries in Morehouse parish. She is a fellow member of The Family History Club with me. We meet monthly at the Snyder Museum in Bastrop.

    1. I know Mrs. Isabelle. We have met before and she has allowed the library to copy many of her collection of Funeral Programs and buy her books. I just looked through her cemetery indexes and the indexes the history club did, but there is no mention of Little Bell.

  2. Hello, I see my grandmothers name but no link for Joy E Phelps in Mature Living magazine. Can you attach a link with info about her poetry. Also, my dad John I Fogleman had a photography shop “Photo Mart” on Disard Street in late 60’s early 70’s. Wondered if you had any pictures of that? Thanks
